What's New: December 2008

Volume 5 Number 6 - December 2008

Autonomy solidifies its position in compliance

London-based Financial-i magazine has recently named Autonomy a leader in E-mail and Instant Messenger compliance.

Autonomy also announced last month the new Version 6 of its "Investor and Early Case Assessment" application that can help financial companies assess their risk and exposure - a real plus given recent worldwide market turmoil.

We've long thought of Autonomy as a compliance company disguised as a search engine company, and they have been acquiring companies to solidify their risk-management and compliance offerings for years.

Scripps Taps Endeca for Intelligent Site Search

Scripps Network Digital has selected Endeca for its HGTV.com site. HGTV uses Endeca's IAC to deliver contextual advertisements and product offerings. While many of Endeca's customers are using the product in government and corporate intranets, the HGTV.com site showcases some of the strengths that give Endeca a strong reputation in customer-facing and retail search.

And regarding Endeca, there is an excellent interview with Daniel Tunkelang, Endeca's Chief scientist and a co-founder, on Fierce content management. He discusses the strengths that he feels set Endeca apart from other enterprise search technologies in an easy-to-understand way. We suggest you have a look.

USA-ONE Interactive Announces FileBound Express Appliance

USA-ONE Interactive has announced a "Google-like Appliance" for full enterprise content management and search. The company provides document management solutions from Denver-based Marex Group, which makes the FileBound Express document management software included in the appliance. The USA-ONE product bundles the scanning and document management software and database on a Windows-based platform with the hardware for a total single vendor solution.

IT Pro talks about Google Search Appliance in the enterprise

The UK-based business IT site IT Pro addresses the topic of enterprise search in a recent article that explains "why you can't always get the best search results for your business" from the Google Search Appliance. They echo some of the things we've mentioned before, such as the lack of fine-control tuning for ranking relevance; but of course many companies and sites do not need much more than the date and URL boosting that the GSA supports. Still, it's interesting to see search 'expertise' beginning to pop up around the world.

Speaking of search expertise, LAW.com has an interesting article this month that explains why enterprise search is a different kind of application than accounting or other applications law firms 9and other corporations) might use. We've long said search is not an "install-and-forget" technology, so we like to see more people agreeing with us!

New company to support Lucene and Solr

Lucid Imagination Inc. is reported to have landed $6M of Series A funding by MassHighTech, the journal of New England technology. Lucid's one page web site tells of all the folks they have who are active in Lucene and Solr development, which is great. Oh, and they do have an email address you can send questions to, as well as an address their customers can use as well. Of course, anyone can email Dr Search.

Speaking of Lucene, both LinkedIn and MySpace have upgraded their search capability with Lucene, according to C-Net. As companies like IBM continue to put development efforts into Lucene, we'll continue to see its capabilities grow. Now we'd like to see someone come up with a product based on Lucene or Solr that had a GUI front end, a Business Console, and predictable scalability.
